Choose a times table

The best order to learn them

Start with tables that have strong patterns, then use them as building blocks for the harder ones. This is the same order as the islands in Wembuno’s Adventure mode.

  1. 1s and 2s. One group of a number, and doubles.
  2. 5s and 10s. Answers ending in 0 or 5, and place value.
  3. 3s and 4s. Doubles plus one more group, and double-doubles.
  4. 9s and 11s. The finger trick and repeating-digit patterns.
  5. 6s and 12s. Combine the 5s, 10s and 2s you already know.
  6. 7s and 8s. By now only a few facts are truly new.
  7. All tables mixed. Mixing tables makes recall fast and flexible.

Why 144 facts are really far fewer

A 12 × 12 chart has 144 boxes, but children do not need to learn 144 separate facts. Because 3 × 8 and 8 × 3 give the same answer, there are only 78 different facts. And once the 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s are known, just 36 new facts remain for the 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 11s and 12s.

That is why Wembuno sometimes asks 8 × 3 and sometimes 3 × 8: seeing both ways makes the job much smaller.

Strategies that work for every table

Skip counting

Counting in 3s, 4s or 6s builds the sequence of answers and helps when a fact is forgotten.

Doubling and halving

The 4s are double the 2s, the 8s are double the 4s, and the 5s are half the 10s.

Build from facts you know

7 × 8 is 5 × 8 plus 2 × 8. Splitting a hard fact into easy parts is a skill for life.

Little and often

Five to ten minutes a day, spread over weeks, beats one long session. Wembuno rounds last one to three minutes.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do children learn their times tables?

Most children start around age 7 or 8 and work toward quick recall of facts up to 12 × 12 by about age 9 or 10. In England, pupils take the Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4, and in the United States the Common Core standards expect children to know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of Grade 3.

How long does it take to learn all the times tables?

It varies a lot from child to child. Short, regular sessions over several weeks usually work far better than cramming. Wembuno tracks every fact separately, so you can see progress table by table.

Should children learn up to 10 × 10 or 12 × 12?

It depends on the curriculum. Some, like England’s, go up to 12 × 12, while others focus on facts up to 10 × 10. Wembuno covers every table up to 12, and you can choose which tables to play.
